Education before the Victorian age wasn't very significant. Children were sent to works to help the family gain wealth. In 1870, there was an act called the Elementary Education Act, which brought education into England. Before the Victorian age in England, only wealthy people were able to get education by going to schools and getting tutors to come and teach them and the poor people were not able to get proper education and they had to study in factories during the break times of their work. After the Elementary Education Act, England made laws that all children of age 5 - 12 have to get educated by going to schools. Schools were made and got cheaper so that the poor class people were able to afford to go to the school.
The different classes in England got different educations. The richer class of England got better education and were able to go to better colleges because they were able to afford better education by tutors and better schools. The lower class of England didn't get much education. Children had to work to support their family and they didn't have time to study. They worked at factories and they only got education from there for only 2 to 3 hours per day. The family were not able to send their children to school because they didn't have money. This shows how the society in the Victorian age was divided into two different classes and the education for both were very different.
The different sex in England split the educations too. Boys were well educated and girls were not. Rich family's boys would learn about science, math, and literature. Rich girls would usually learn how to dance, sing, and draw. The poor family's male would usually learn everything but very little per day and poor family's girls would not get education. This shows how different sex meant different education in the Victorian age.
Victorian Class
This picture shows how there are only male students in the class and this shows how female students were not really well educated. Also they all have good clothes meaning that they come from a high class family.
Victorian School
This school is built for the poor students to attend which shows the effect of the Elementary Education Act. More poor students were able to get education because these schools were built in England.
